နိုင်ငံခြား ဂန္ထဝင်တွေ ပျင်းစရာကောင်းတာ တစ်ခါတလေမှာ ဘာသာပြန်မူ မတူလို့လဲ ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။ ဥပမာနဲ့ ပြောပြပါရစေ။

Brothers Karamazov ကိုပဲ ၂၀၂၃ မှာ Michael Katz ရဲ့ ဘာသာပြန်မူ အသစ်ထွက်လာပါတယ်။ သူ့ရှေ့မှာလဲ မူတွေ မရေတွက်နိုင်အောင် ရှိနေတာပဲ။ ဘာလို့ ပိုက်ဆံ အကုန်ခံနေအုံးမလဲပေါ့ မေးစရာရှိလာမယ်။

တကယ်တော့ နောက်ပိုင်းထွက်တဲ့ မူတွေဟာ ပိုပြီး ခေတ်သစ် စာဖတ်သူတွေအတွက် လွယ်ကူလာစေတာ အမှန်ပါပဲ။ ပိုပြီး ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့ မိတ်ဆက်၊ ဖြည့်စွက်ချက်၊ ခေတ်နဲ့ လျော်ညီတဲ့အသုံးအနှုန်းတွေကိုပါ ထည့်သွင်းထားတာမို့ ပိုပြီး ဖတ်ရတာ ကောင်းပါတယ်။

‘ကာရာမာဇော့ ညီအစ်ကိုများ’ လို့ ဆရာနတ်နွယ်က ဘာသာပြန်ထားပါတယ်။ ဆရာ့ရဲ့ အမှာစာအရ သူဟာ ရုရှားစာကနေ ပြန်တဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ်မူကို ယူတဲ့အခါ Constance Garnette (1912) မူနဲ့ David Magarshack (1950) မူကို ညှိနှိုင်းပြီး ဘာသာပြန်ကြောင်း ဖော်ပြထားပါတယ်။

ဂါနက်နဲ့ မက်ဂါရှက်တို့ရဲ့ စာဟာ ကျိန်းသေပေါက် ဝိတိုရိယခေတ် အရေးအသားတွေ ဖြစ်နေတာမို့လို့ သူတို့ဆီကနေ ဘာသာပြန်တဲ့အခါမှာလဲ အချို့သော စာပိုဒ်တွေဟာ ခေတ်သစ် စာဖတ်သူတွေအတွက် တစ်ခေါက်နဲ့ နားမလည်နိုင် ဖြစ်ကောင်း ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။ သူတို့ရဲ့ မူက တိကျ၊ ပြတ်သားလွန်းလို့ literal translation or dry translation ဖြစ်သွားတယ်လို့ ဆိုကြတယ်။

ဖတ်ရတာ နည်းနည်း ပျင်းစရာကောင်းသွားတယ်ပေါ့။ စာထဲပါတဲ့ အတိုင်း ပြန်တာဆိုတော့။ ဒါပေမဲ့ ဆရာ နတ်နွယ်ရဲ့ အရေးအသားကတော့ မြန်မာနားနဲ့ အနီးစပ်ဆုံး ကိုက်ညီအောင် ဘာသာပြန်ထားတာကို ဖတ်ရတာ အားရစရာပါ။

အခု ထွက်လာတဲ့ မိုက်ကယ် ကတ်ဇ်ရဲ့ မူဟာ ၂၀၂၃ မှာ ထွက်လာတာဖြစ်ပြီး သူက ဇာတ်ကောင်တွေရဲ့ Psychological depth နဲ့ voice ကို ပိုပြီး ပြောင်မြောက်အောင် ဖော်ပြနိုင်တယ်လို့ ဆိုပါတယ်။ နောက်ပြီး စာရေးသူရဲ့ အသံအတိုင်းလိုက်ပြီး ခနဲ့တဲ့တဲ့၊ ရွဲ့တဲ့တဲ့ ရေးတဲ့နေရာမှာလဲ ပိုပြီး ရှေ့မူတွေထက် မြင်သာလာတဲ့အပြင် fast pace ဖြစ်အောင် စီစဥ်ထားတာမို့ စာဖတ်သူအတွက် ရုရှားစာပေကို မပျင်းရစေဘူးလို့ ဆိုထားတယ်။ (အဆုံးထိ မဖတ်ရသေးလို့ ဘယ်လောက်ထိမှန်သလဲတော့ မသိသေးပါဘူး။)

Constance ရဲ့ ၁၉၁၂ မူမှာ -

ALEXEY Fyodorovitch Karamazov was the third son of Fyodor Pavlovitch Karama-

zov, a landowner well known in our district in his own day, and still remembered

among us owing to his gloomy and tragic death, which happened thirteen years ago,

and which I shall describe in its proper place. For the present I will only say that

this "landowner"- for so we used to call him, although he hardly spent a day of his

life on his own estate- was a strange type, yet one pretty frequently to be met with,

a type abject and vicious and at the same time senseless. But he was one of those

senseless persons who are very well capable of looking after their worldly affairs,

and, apparently, after nothing else. Fyodor Pavlovitch, for instance, began with next

to nothing; his estate was of the smallest; he ran to dine at other men’s tables, and

fastened on them as a toady, yet at his death it appeared that he had a hundred

thousand roubles in hard cash. At the same time, he was all his life one of the most

senseless, fantastical fellows in the whole district. I repeat, it was not stupidity- the

majority of these fantastical fellows are shrewd and intelligent enough- but just

senselessness, and a peculiar national form of it.

For now all I’ll say about this “landowner” (as he was called by us, although for his whole life he hardly ever lived on his estate) is that he was a strange type, though one that’s encountered fairly often; not only was he utterly worthless and depraved, but he had no sense at all—and yet he was one of those people with no sense who knew how to take very good care of his worldly affairs, and, apparently, not much else.

For example, Fyodor Pavlovich had begun with almost nothing; he was the owner of a small estate; he hastened to take a place at other men’s dinner tables, latching on as a freeloader; that said, at the time of his death he had accumulated a hundred thousand rubles in cold cash. Yet at the same time, all his life he continued to be one of the eccentrics in our entire district who was most lacking in sense.

I repeat: it was not a matter of stupidity; the majority of these eccentrics are rather clever and shrewd, just lacking in basic common sense—and displaying a particularly Russian form of that lack.
